Our Hiring Process

Stage 1

Apply

Fill out an application to kick off the process.
Stage 2

Interview Phase

During this phase, you will have multiple interviews about the job, theology, and TLI ministry ethos.

Initial Interview
In this initial conversation, we’d like to get to know you a bit and hear about your interest in TLI. We’ll ask some questions to help us assess our alignment in areas such as ethos, philosophy of ministry, and approach to cross-cultural work. There will be plenty of time for you to ask questions as well as you consider whether TLI is a good fit for you.

Job Interview
In the job interview, we’d like to learn more about you as we consider the position for which you are applying. We’ll dive more into your skills and experiences as they relate to the role and how you might best serve.

Theological Interview
The theological interview is an exploration of your theological fit within TLI’s Confessional Statement. We’ll be assessing both your doctrinal commitments and the way you articulate them across diverse cultures and educational backgrounds. We'd like to hear about your cross-cultural teaching experiences and how you might handle problem solving in various international contexts.
Stage 3

Field-Readiness Phase

In this stage, we will send you a questionnaire to help assess your suitability and preparedness to handle the rigors of cross-cultural living. This is a more in-depth and comprehensive questionnaire, which we save for candidates who have advanced to this stage in the hiring process. It will include areas such as your spiritual, physical, and mental health, as well as your marriage and family (if applicable).  If you are married, your spouse will fill out their own version of this questionnaire independently.

After completing the questionnaire, you (and your spouse, if married) will meet with members of the Care Team to talk through aspects of the Field-Readiness Questionnaire.
Stage 4

Vision Trip

By this stage in the application process, we have already been in touch with the local partner whom you would be working with abroad, and they are excited to meet you. We will now introduce you directly to begin conversations. If everyone thinks a fit is likely, we will then arrange a vision trip for you to visit the site in person, spend time with the team on the ground there, and further seek the Lord’s guidance on whether to proceed.
Stage 5

HQ Visit

A visit to our headquarters in Minneapolis (with your spouse, if married) is the last step in our hiring process. Here you will meet with the Partner Care team, as well as other leaders and key office staff.  Among other things, we will further discuss your role and the logistics of moving forward.

Extending a letter of appointment confirms that we believe the Lord is leading all of us to have you serve with TLI. This is not a contract of employment, but when you sign the letter, you become an appointee of TLI and may begin to build your support team.
Stage 6

Build your support team

Before employment, your final step is to develop a team of ministry partners who commit to give financially and support you in prayer. Like many mission organizations, TLI is dependent on the consistent financial support of individuals and churches, and we value doing this work in partnership with the body of Christ. While each staff person is responsible for raising the financial support to cover their salary, benefits, and ministry expenses, we’ll be coaching and encouraging you the whole way!
Stage 7

Deploy

With a team of ministry partners supporting you, you can begin your employment with TLI. This is your actual point of hire in which you will start receiving paychecks and onboarding into your role.
